Advice to Writers

I may have posted this before. Maybe not. Doesn't matter. Shut up.

I have this list taped to my desk so I'm not sure where I found it. But, I took a look at it today to get my head straight since I'm writing sketches while simultaneously writing for work. Since a lot of my friends are in or entering a writing process right now, I figured I'd share! I've found them to be very helpful in my years of writing. {Not that I think I'm an expert. Just sharing.}

• Keep your well of ideas full.
• Record moments, fleeting impressions, overheard dialogue, your own sadnesses and bewilderment and joys.
• Write on the page as if you are talking to a friend. {I'd add to this by saying speak out your dialogue. If it doesn't sound natural, then change it.}
• Don't plan the ending.
• Treat writing like a job. Set a goal and get there as if you are getting paid to. {Even though, most likely, you're not.}
• Leave a decent space of time between writing something and editing it. {Honestly, the most useful piece of advice ever.}
• Always carry a notebook.
• Live life and write about it.
• Other people can help you a bit, but essentially you're on your own. Nobody is making you do this; you chose it, so don't whine.
